A friend passed along Henry Nouwen quote which included this bit: “To choose blessings instead of curses … asks for an enormous leap of faith” and asked “Is this possible?”
The question is a particularly poignant one for me right now: we’ve been getting our house ready for sale for the past couple of weeks, a process that I find fraught with stress.
Still, I believe it is possible choose to be blessed in this situation.
Which is not to say that I am adept at it — I do not consistantly choose to be blessed. Too often right now I find myself miserable and even petulant in my circumstances.
But, I can choose to be blessed. I believe it is a mindset, a way of looking at things — my choice of paradigm, if you will — that determines what we take from any situation.
In some situations, this takes a tremendous amount of prayer and force of will, but it is possible. It is, after all, easy to be blessed when everything is going as we want. Blessings, then, are like manna from heaven.
Living in grace (the blessed state) when we would naturally be miserable is much more difficult, but it is still possible.
