A friend gave me an old UltraSPARC 5 — perfect for my home firewall I thought. I hooked up my old 17inch IBM monitor, but it didn’t work. After looking around a bit, I found that the UltraSPARC 5 needs a “Plug-n-Play” monitor that returns EDID values. The FAQ says any PNP monitor should do.

So, I went and got a cheap PNP monitor. Wrong! It isn’t a true multisync monitor and only wants to use a few select sync rates at a few select resolutions. Time to try to convince CompUSA that I should get another monitor without paying their silly 15% “open box” fee.
