What I'll miss about New Orleans

The weather right now is so nice. Finally, at the end of September, it decides to become bearable in New Orleans. The heat and humidity have disappeared.

Extra long lunches are called for. I spent a few hours this week down by the river re-reading Walker Percy's "Second Coming" and watching tourists and the homeless walk along the dock. That is a really unique experience — watching a group of apparently homeless people stroll down the dock and, the next minute, listening in as the man strolling past tells his companion that "$750,000 is reasonable considering what they did to my career."

Of course, then you begin to wonder: what kind of career did he have? Surely he was some sort of hot shot lawyer complaining about being kicked out of a firm. Or something.

The laziness of the city is even more enjoyable during this weather. On Monday, I bought half a muffaletta (but it had the wrong kind of bread!) and an Abita and went down to the river. That started my week at the river. Yesterday, a full po-boy, being insufficient, I went and ordered some beignets from Cafe du Monde and watched the Vietnamese wait-staff eat their pho.

It's wonderful, and I'm gonna miss it. St. Louis, here I come!
